I work at a smaller law firm. There are about 20 someodd lawyers in the firm, and several support staff - paralegals, legal secretaries, etc. We all get along well, for the most part. There's one guy who works there, Toby, who was involved in an accident several years ago and had to have the front half of his foot amputated. I've not really pressed him for details about the incident, but I think it has something to do with being drunk and too close to metro rail tracks... Anyway, one day, we're all going out for lunch at a local restaurant, Toby, with his crutches, coming along with us. We decided to try a new bbq place nearby (this being Texas, you can find bbq just about anywhere). We are filing in to the door and the manager stops Toby and tells him that he's not welcome in the restaurant and that he would have to eat somewhere else because of his foot. We pressed the manager to let Toby in, but the guy refused to relent. We all left and went somewhere else. We didn't think it was right to give money to a restaurant that's lactose intolerant.

Diving Headfirst Into the 21st Century

I got my iPod shuffle in the mail a couple days ago. It's my first foray into MP3 players. I bought it with blood - literally.

Anyway, as I was registering my iPod and getting it set up to play music, I had to sign a few terms and conditions. I read through them and noticed the following, which is one of those terms that you think should go without saying but still needs to be said:

THE APPLE SOFTWARE IS NOT INTENDED FOR USE IN THE OPERATION OF NUCLEAR FACILITIES, AIRCRAFT NAVIGATION OR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS, LIFE SUPPORT MACHINES OR OTHER EQUIPMENT IN WHICH THE FAILURE OF THE APPLE SOFTWARE COULD LEAD TO DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR SEVERE PHYSICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE.

I'm not sure how many people are going to try to operate a nuclear facility with an MP3 player, but I wouldn't put it past McGuyver.

Morning preparation

I spent some time this morning trying to get the Apple dressed for school. I told him to put on shorts. "I don't want those brown shorts." I showed him another pair. "I don't want those brown shorts."
"What shorts do you want?"
He points.
"Which ones?" I don't see any shorts in the direction he's pointing.
"Those ones." He points again.
"The cat is not shorts."

True Story

I enlisted in the Air Force in 1995. The weeks before I enlisted, I decided to give myself a little vacation and flew back to Michigan to visit my family, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. The trip was fun; I got to play basketball with the cousins, go to the sports bar with my aunt, chew the fat with my grandparents, and just have fun all around. Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the trip was the day I flew out. My uncle Bill works for GM in one of the parts shops - he replaces the parts of the car that are damaged and still under warranty, the hood, the doors, etc. I got to go spend the morning with him at the shop, as he was taking me to the airport to fly home. While I was there, I got to help replace a front quarter panel and a bumper for a Pontiac that had come in for repairs. This was exciting for me, because it was the first time I'd ever had an auto-body experience.

Funny

We went out to eat today after going to the zoo. The kids had a great time at the zoo, though I got a little dehydrated, but that's beside the point. We went to Fuddrucker's - which has pretty darn good hamburgers - and ate there.

While we were eating, a family came in and sat down behind my wife and daughter - so I could see them, but wife and daughter couldn't. Anyway, there was a guy who sat down with a shirt that had some clever writing on it, which I thought I'd share with you verbatim:

Stupidity is not a crime. Your free to go.

Even if I had laughed out loud at it, I don't think they guy would have understood why.
