Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself

You would think that at some point I would stop being surprised when I read about religious intolerance in America, but it continues to amaze me. We live in a nation where people theoretically are free to practice as they wish, free from government intrusion. We teach our children that America was founded by Europeans who wanted freedom to believe the way they wanted. We have a President that recognizes Chanukkah, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, etc.

But then practice comes into play.

Sadly, while lawsuits like that filed by the Dobrich family are more than warranted, I think they will do little more than galvanize those on the religious right who literally believe First Amendment claims aimed at protecting families like the Dobrich's are a personal attack on Christianity and its "right" to exist unfettered as it has for so many years. Change must come from the inside. If modern Christians were to honestly examine the example of Christ and compare it to their behavior toward the Dobrich family (et al), they would discover their actions resemble the Pharisees (the pious religious leaders Jesus offended by claiming they followed the letter, but not the spirit, of the law) than Christ.

Also, as I've stated many times before, this "religious tolerance" guaranteed by the Constitution - or at least interpreted by those damned liberal activist judges [insert sarcasm here] - Christians find so offensive today may serve to protect them when they are no longer the vocal majority of Sussex County. I don't think the religious right would appreciate a mandatory, school-sponsored, mid-day prayer to Allah any more than the Dobrich family appreciates a sermon instead of a commencement address.

Oh, but that couldn't happen here. Not in America. We're a Christian nation? Right?

Right.
