Finals Conversations

When studying for finals in Law School, rational thought patterns tend to cease to exist. The other day, while taking a break from studying Payment Systems, I spent some time talking with RHM and a couple of our friends. The conversation came around to our school's Public Interest Law Society's volunteer trip to New Orleans as a part of the Hurricane Relief Network. Three of us of the four at the table were selected to go, the other did not want to go. I commented that I was somewhat excited because it was my first trip there, and I had never before been to Louisiana. My friend then said "What? So you've never been to New Orleans?" We laughed, because apparently she thought it would have been possible for me to get to New Orleans without going into Louisiana (it was the comment we laughed at, not her). A couple minutes later, a different person said - "So you've never even crossed the state line?"

Finals are tough on us all.

Interesting comment. I went to law school in Texas and never made it to New Orleans -- something I regret. I never occurred to me to regret that I never made it to Louisiana.

Good luck with your exams.

BTW, on a different topic, I appreciated your input about the nature of the oath incoming Congressmen take. I find oath-taking generally an interesting business, because I've really never been sure how binding they are in a modern age. In a believing age, oath taking put ones soul at risk. Now, I suspect that even religious people view it as mere formalism, something that you can enter into with your fingers crossed. Oaths are a nice idea in principle and show, but I do wonder if we should ever shape our expectations about conduct based on the fact that someone took an oath.

I honestly don't remember that conversation, but I know it wasn't me. I'm aware that there are other state lines to cross other than the one between LA & TX, despite how fried my brain is right now!

NOLA is going to be a great experience. I'm glad you're going.
