My Only Real Concern is That I'm Not That Concerned

I understand the swine flu is serious, and I understand it has the possibility of being really bad, but I'm just not feeling the concern that others are feeling. I'm hoping this isn't my version of The Lottery, but I just keep thinking that people are overreacting to the threat.

On average 35,000 people die each year from the flu symtoms in America. So as right now I feel like you, there is no reason to overreact.

It took me a couple of days of hearing about it before I read up on it, and that was primarily due to my family members incessant worrying about it.

I feel a little desensitized to these things, maybe because we have a 24/7 news cycle culture which hyperventilates about stories and then drops them as quickly as they picked it up. The odds, then, of something being genuinely worthy of rapid response becomes quite small. I'm not advocating desensitization, of course. I'm just admitting I fall prey to it and hoping that news agencies would be a little bit more responsible in their presentation.

Personally, I'm hoping it is the Universe' cure for the drug wars raging in Mexico at this time. Otherwise, I'm not too excited, either. I'm sick and tired (a la Bill Cosby) of hearing about it.
