I Dig Rock and Roll Music

Although the new pop/hip-hop/metal stuff isn't to my taste, with a few exceptions.

I'm a real fan of 60's and 70's music, and since I grew up in the 80's and 90's, I followed it then as well.

And of course it's an inequivocable, unarguable, undebatable fact that the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" is the single greatest rock and roll song of all time, bar none.

I always found it interesting when people would remake a song, because often, in my mind, it wasn't as good as the original. But that's my opinion. What do you think about the following?

1. Land of 1000 Dances - Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, or Wilson Picket?
2. American Pie - Don McLean or Madonna?
3. The LocoMotion - Little Eva, or Kylie Minogue?
4. Venus - Shocking Blue or Bananarama
5. Gloria - Them or Shadows of Knight
6. Hooked on a Feeling - Blue Suede or David Hasselhoff
7. Hazy Shade of Winter - Simon and Garfunkel or the Bangles
8. I Saw Her (Him) Standing There - Tiffany
9. Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler or Nicki French
10. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns and Roses or Sheryl Crow
11. California Girls - Beach Boys or David Lee Roth?
12. Live and Let Die - Wings or Guns and Roses?

A few of these I can't call to mind, but I'll weigh in where I can.

2. Don McLean. For the love of Pete, who would pick a Madonna remake of anything?
4. I almost always pick the original, so Shocking Blue, but I will say that Bananarama did a pretty good job with it.
6. Where's B.J. Thomas?
7. As in 4., S&G, but I also liked the remake.
8. Oh, give me a break.
9. Sheryl Crow.
11. Beach Boys. Duh.

I thought about BJ Thomas, but thought that David Hasselhoff would be more humorous, EP.

For 8, of course, the original was with the Beatles.

Couple other additions -
13: Twist and Shout - Isley Brothers and Beatles
14: Silhouettes on the Shade - The Diamonds or Herman's Hermits
15: My Maria - B. W. Stevenson or Brooks and Dunn

Paul McCartney always wins, whichever band he happens to be in. Always.

I don't usually like remakes of anything. The original is always the best.

2. American Pie - No contest
4. Venus - Bananarama. I loved the Bananarama video, one of them was really hot...I was 16 so...
5. Gloria - The Doors version rules.
7. Hazy Shade of Winter - Tough one. once again, I was 16 or so when the Bangles re-did that tune, so...see the "Venus" post.
10. Sweet Child O' Mine - I didn't even know Sheryl did that.
11. California Girls - DLR is embarrassing
12. Live and Let Die - I heard that Paul McCartney liked the GnR version better than the winds version. I'm partial to Wings though.

Don't forget "Cats in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin. Ugly Kid Joe had a huge hit in the early 90s w/ that remake.
