Objection, Hearsay

Hearsay is: any out of court statement, made by a declarant (person), which is offered to prove the truth of the matter asserted.

Essentially, this means that the person made the statement to prove that the statement he is making is true.

You will be surprised at how often you have cause to value or regret the hearsay rule once you start practicing. During one of my favorite cases, by knowing the hearsay rule, I was able to keep out ambiguous evidence that could have been damaging, and get in incredibly helpful evidence that, on its face, appeared to be hearsay.
