Opinion Day

Yesterday, the news rang out that the Supreme Court outlawed medical marijuana - to some a blow to states' rights, to others a blow to legalized pot.

The opinion question today is, should marijuana be legalized or not? I think it's safe to say it won't be made legal anytime soon, but still, input is encouraged.

POT: i wholeheartedly support the legalization of marijuana. frankly, i don't understand why it's illegal in the first place. and don't give me that "gateway drug" bullshit. you want a gateway drug? let's start with alcohol, people. i didn't try cocaine because i smoked pot, i tried cocaine because i was drinking. and i don't smoke pot now because i get "the fear" and it also makes me lazy (and i'm lazy enough as it is!) but i know people with health problems who manage their pain by smoking pot (which is less harmful than say, morphine or other prescription painkillers). i also have a very good friend who beat cancer 10 years ago. when he went in for his chemo treatments, he'd smoke a little pot (and the hospital staff would look the other way). not only did he beat the cancer, but he got through chemo without getting really sick from it.

B-BALL: regardless of who wins, it's going to be a good series. but you know who i'm rooting for! i'm so glad the pistons beat the heat. damn, i'm glad i don't have to watch freakin' shaq!

I definitely think pot should be legalized. It just makes no sense to me to criminalize a substance like pot, but keep alcohol legal. If one is legal, so should the other be. And once legal, it should be treated in the same way as alcohol -- taxed and kept from minors. As it is, I suspect part of the cachet for minors is the thrill of using an illegal substance.

As for pot, I think it makes people stupid -- stupid while they're high and, if they use it for enough years, stupid forever. But that should be their choice, not the governments.
