Why I'm not a Republican

In a nutshell, the current Republican Party is not the party I could support. Perhaps that's because the Party is falling to its fringe. (Source: Balloon Juice)

If the Republican Party was "falling to its fringe" they would not have selected John McCain as the nominee.

McCain won the nomination by surviving. He has shored up the base by specifically playing to the fringe crowd. Had Senator McCain of 2000 been running this campaign, he likely would not have secured the nomination, nor would he have the support of these same individuals. He became what the fringe wanted, whether that change is permanent is unclear, but it is clear that this man is not the same man who endured robocalls in South Carolina from the current administration's campaign implying he is illegitimately fathered a black baby. Rather, this is the man who partnered with that same group to send robocalls charging Senator Obama is the bogeyman. He represents the fringe by playing to their fears.

Someday, the Goldwater Republican party will emerge from this, and the party will be stronger and better for it.
